Court Sentences Man to 3-Year Imprisonment for Yam Theft

A Magistrates court sitting in Osogbo on Wednesday, sentenced 28-year-old ex-convict, Jimoh Akeem to 3 years jail term for stealing 17 tubers of yam.

According to the prosecutor, CPL Oluokun Babtunde, the incident occurred on July 27, 2025, at about 10pm around Africa primary school, Ataoja area, Osogbo.

He explained that Akeem, stole 17 tubers of yam valued at N35,000.

The prosecutor noted that the offence contravened section 390(9) of the criminal code, cap 34, Vol.II, laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003, and is punishable under it.

Akeem, who just served a jail term, pleaded guilty to charge preferred against him.

While pleading for leniency, he explained that he committed the crime due to hunger.

He told the court that after he sent packing from his mechanic workshop, he could no longer afford to feed himself.

In her ruling, Presiding Magistrate Muibah Olatunji sentenced the defendant to three years’ imprisonment with hard labor and without the option of a fine.
