Kalu Links Nigeria’s Rising Insecurity to Local, International Political Conspiracy

Former Abia State Governor and Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has alleged that the rising wave of insecurity across Nigeria is tied to political maneuvers ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a live interview on national television Sunday night, Kalu claimed that local and foreign actors are sponsoring unrest to destabilize the country.

According to him, the security crisis is “politically motivated,” with some of the perpetrators allegedly operating as mercenaries engaged by politicians.

“This is politically motivated. Some of these actors are partially mercenaries brought in by politicians to destabilize Nigeria,”

Kalu criticized Nigeria’s under-policing and the slow progress on the State Police Bill, stressing that the nation’s security architecture remains inadequate for its population.

He noted that although the Senate approved the recruitment of 100,000 soldiers, Nigeria “with nearly 300 million people”—requires far more manpower in its policing system.

Addressing speculations about foreign support, Kalu expressed openness to the proposed intervention of U.S. President Donald Trump but emphasized that any assistance must respect Nigeria’s sovereignty.

“Nigeria is a sovereign nation. Any assistance must work with our government,” he said.

Drawing from his time as governor, Kalu referenced the Bakassi security outfit, which he said played a pivotal role in tackling insecurity in Abia and Anambra States.

He also called for deeper reflection on the prolonged crisis in the South-East, lamenting the devastating impact on the Igbo community, including: Over 30,000 lives lost, Massive destruction of businesses, Worsening instability linked to the IPOB insurgency.

Kalu reaffirmed his commitment to working with the federal government toward political solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges.

He stressed the need for a coordinated and strategic approach to safeguard citizens, stabilize the nation, and prevent further escalation.
