NANS Raises Alarm Over Rising Insecurity, Demands Urgent Action

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone (Zone D), has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity across Nigeria, calling on security agencies.

In a release issued by the Secretary General of the zone, Comrade Oluwole Olutunde Aboke (O’Destiny), condemned the increasing cases of killings, kidnappings, banditry, and coordinated violent attacks, describing them as clear evidence that governments at all levels are failing in their primary responsibility of protecting citizens.

According to the statement, “No nation can progress under fear, chaos, or uncertainty. We call on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to restore peace and stability across the country.”

NANS Zone D faulted security agencies in Osun State—particularly the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Amotekun Corps—for allegedly drifting from their core mandate of ensuring public safety.

The association noted that agencies appear more focused on “mundane issues” rather than actively preventing threats, a situation it says leaves residents and students across campuses exposed.

According to statement “The Office of the Secretary General, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest (Zone D), expresses deep concern over the rising wave of insecurity across Nigeria and strongly condemns all forms of attacks, killings, banditry, kidnappings, and coordinated acts of terror raveging our land. Governments at all levels have failed the basic purpose and function of government; which is the protection of lives and property. No nation can progress under fear, chaos, or uncertainty, and we call on the Federal Government to intensify all efforts to restore peace and stability across the country.

“In Osun State, we specifically call on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), Amotekun Corps, and all other security agencies to rise to their constitutional responsibilities by being fully prepared, vigilant, and proactive in securing the lives and properties of our people.

It is unfortunate that in recent times, security agencies in Osun State appear to have gradually drifted away from their primary mandate of protecting citizens, they appear to be more interested in mundane issues while paying little attention to matters that has to do with their core mandate. This unwarranted deviation exposes residents including students across various campuses to avoidable threats.

Osun State also remains one of the only states in the Southwest where security agencies have no working synergy or communication structure with the students’ community.
This lack of collaboration poses serious risks and leaves students vulnerable in times of emergencies.

Just yesterday, disturbing though unverified reports suggested that the Iwo–Osogbo road was unsafe for travelers. Such panic-inducing situations could have triggered chaos if not properly addressed. Additionally, several parts of neighboring Kwara State have recently suffered severe security breaches, and it is only a matter of time before such threats escalate if Osun does not act swiftly.

In light of this, NANS Southwest (Zone D) calls on the Osun State Government, the Police, DSS, Amotekun, Civil Defence, community leaders, and the students’ community to convene an urgent security roundtable to develop coordinated preventive strategies. Osun has long been celebrated as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria, and every institution must work collectively to preserve that legacy.

The safety of Nigerian students and citizens remains non-negotiable, and NANS Zone D will continue to advocate, engage, and demand accountability from all stakeholders until security is fully restored across all communities.
