Christmas: NUT Lagos Praises Sanwo-Olu’s Support for Teachers, Seeks 65-Year Retirement Age

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Lagos State Wing, extends Christmas greetings to all teachers and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the state.

According to the Chairman of the union, Comrade Hassan Akitoye, and Secretary, Comrade Gbenga Ayetoba, in a Christmas congratulatory message jointly signed and made available to newsmen on Wednesday, the NUT Lagos State Wing expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the Governor in revitalizing the education sector and acknowledged the hard work of educators.

The message stated that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has made the teaching profession rewarding for them and raised the standards of education through investment in infrastructure and capacity building.

The Lagos State Wing of the NUT said further that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s government prioritized teachers’ welfare and committed unprecedented investment in education and teaching.

All Lagos State teachers appreciated and commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s gesture towards prompt payment of teachers’ salaries, allowances as and when due, including promotions.

They added that not only had the teaching environment been made more conducive for teachers under the incumbent administration in the state, but there had also been improvement in the performance of pupils in national examinations.

The Lagos State Wing NUT bosses said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu met and fulfilled the majority of demands of the teachers without any confrontation.

The NUT bosses extolled the Governor for this and urged him to implement their request for a 65-year retirement age for teachers in the state.

The two labour leaders concluded their statement by extending Christmas greetings to all teachers in Lagos State and appreciating them for supporting the union.

They admonished their members to continue supporting the union and promised a more purposeful achievement in 2026.

The union’s leader added that teachers’ welfare is of paramount importance and will continue to be presented for government approval.

They urged teachers to keep playing their roles as key drivers of educational excellence in Lagos State, the center of excellence.

The labour leaders reminded us of the outstanding performance of union members in the 2025 “Best Teachers of the Year” awards in Nigeria, where members won awards in different categories, including an eighteen-seater bus.

They admonished them to continue in the same direction in the year ahead, as teachers in Lagos State lead the way and others follow.
