OAU Unveils Giant New-Look Bronze Statue of Obafemi Awolowo

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has unveiled a giant bronze statue of the late nationalist and statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, marking a renewed effort by the institution to honour his legacy and inspire future generations.

The imposing artwork a seven-foot bronze figure mounted on a pedestal that raises its full height to about 15 feet, presents Awolowo in a striking new look: adorned in a judicial wig and gown rather than his commonly depicted traditional attire.

The artistic choice, according to the donors and university authorities, symbolizes Awolowo’s intellectual depth, discipline, and lifelong commitment to law, governance, and education.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony behind the iconic Oduduwa Hall, the OAU Vice-Chancellor described the sculpture as “a monumental reminder of the ideals that shaped modern Nigeria,” adding that the university was proud to host one of the most detailed and symbolically rich representations of the late sage.

The statue was donated by renowned art patron and philanthropist, Prince Yemisi Shyllon, whose contribution was applauded by the university community, traditional rulers, Awolowo family members, alumni, and students who attended the event. Shyllon said the gesture was part of his continuing mission to support cultural preservation and strengthen the connection between academia and Nigeria’s artistic heritage.

“This is more than a sculpture; it is a living lesson in history,” he said. “Awolowo stands tall in Nigerian memory, and it is important for institutions like OAU to project his ideals.”

The new-look statue, positioned strategically along Road One for maximum visibility, is expected to become a major landmark on campus and a frequent stop for visitors, researchers, and students drawn to Awolowo’s enduring influence on politics, social policy, and education.

With the unveiling, OAU joins the growing list of national institutions investing in public art to preserve the stories of Nigeria’s iconic leaders, while reinforcing the values of service, courage, and intellectual excellence that Chief Obafemi Awolowo embodied.
