The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) has accused unnamed politicians of plans to rig the 2023 general elections.

HEDA, at a one-day Anti-Corruption Situation Room Forum (ACSR) in Abuja on Thursday, said unscrupulous politicians were planning to disenfranchise Nigerians.

Tony Ojukwu, Executive Secretary, Human Rights Commission, said politicians were buying PVCs in regions where they had the fewest supporters.

Mr Ojukwu said the PVCs were bought from the owners at about N5,000 or more, and would be returned or destroyed after the elections, rendering them useless.

He said that the plan was to discourage Nigerians from voting their opponents.

The event, organised by HEDA in partnership with WARDC and the National Human Rights Commission, and themed “Towards Nigeria’s 2023 General Elections”, was to examine the factors that pose a threat to the sanctity of the forthcoming 2023 general elections.

Speaking on electoral fraud, Hajia Saudatu Madia, Secretary-General, Women Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), said elections in Nigeria had become “transactional” and were “for the highest bidder”.

She cited the dollarisation of the primary elections of the two major political parties, saying no one had been prosecuted despite overwhelming evidence of electoral fraud.
