Despite a nearly three-hour journey down the M6, the local organisation won five silvers and one gold at the event and also met former light-welterweight and welterweight world champion Ricky Hatton.

Day one began with the 2009 under-54kg semis which featured Cayden Sheppard, who was fighting in his final bout before taking a break from the sport.

In the fight, Cayden impressed his coaches with his fitness, however just missed out on a place in the final. But he was applauded out of the ring by the traveling team.

Rounding off day one, Elliot Murray fought in the 2008 under-63kg final, putting together a good display of boxing with a confident backfoot display, however, the judges did not score in his favour despite a number of good combinations, leaving the youngster to claim silver.

Day two featured three finals for Workington Amateur Boxing Club with the first involving Leon Emerson who, according to coach Alan Murray, put on the ‘best display’ of his career.

Emerson survived two standing eights in the bout but began to take the fight to his opponent as the bout progressed leading to a split decision victory and the gold medal in the 2008 under-60kg category.

In the 2007 under-60kg final, Alfie Govans was in action with a shaky start being replaced by a confident late fight showing, however, this performance came too late with the judges ruling in his opponents’ favour.

Finally, the 2007 under-63kg final featured Elliot Murray once again after a contender dropped out, with the local boxer putting in a ‘great display’ despite the judges awarding the goal to his opponent.

Workington Amateur Boxing Club commenting on the event said: “A special thanks to Coaches Alan, Chris, Dain, Graham, and Joe for transporting, chaperoning, and also coaching the boxers on a highly successful weekend and to West Coast Competitions and Picture It Cumbria for making the club look the part in their attire.

“Heading into 2023/24 the club have ambitions of attending a tournament overseas if possible.”
