It has come to the attention of the Deputy Speaker, State of Osun House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. ‘Femi Popoola a misrepresentation of a comment by him in Akure by a mischief maker on social media.
We would have let it slide in the spirit that almost all the information posted on social media are not verified, mischievous, politicized and unfounded, but it will not be appropriate to allow the misgivings to sink in the hearts of our good people Osun and beyond.
The Deputy Speaker was in Akure to represent the state at the Senate committee on review of the 1999 constitution to participate in a joint public hearing, his recommendations were in support of gender equality/increase participation of women and vulnerable group in governance.
He posited that in order to encourage increased participation, reference must be made to the United Nations resolution NO.5 that 35% participation should be given to women in government.
He also added that the said 35% should be included in the constitution.
One will wonder how the aforementioned positions could amount to saying 35% female representation in Nigeria is not workable.
It is either the author of the malicious publication is not well lettered and could not comprehend simple English or out to incite unsuspecting public against the person of the Deputy Speaker as evident in the usage of the word “Please mobilize against his position”
As a lawmaker and officer of the law, the Deputy Speaker will always do his best to make life better for our teeming masses including women.
The paper presented by the Deputy Speaker at the public hearing is available on request.
