Just In: Former AGF Sentenced to 72 Years over N868 Million Fraud

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, to 72 years in prison for defrauding the government of ₦868.46 million.

Nwabuoku was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges related to money laundering and the misappropriation of public funds.

In a statement on Monday via its official X handle, the EFCC described the conviction as a landmark step in the fight against corruption, emphasising the need for accountability in public office.

“The former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, prosecuted for money laundering involving ₦868.46 million, has been convicted and sentenced to 72 years imprisonment,” the agency stated.

Court proceedings revealed that Nwabuoku allegedly diverted and concealed public funds through multiple transactions, with the prosecution presenting evidence detailing the flow of the misappropriated money.

The 72-year sentence represents the cumulative penalties across the various counts of which he was found guilty. Nwabuoku had briefly held the position of Acting Accountant-General before his removal amid corruption allegations.

The EFCC hailed the ruling as a deterrent against financial crimes in the public sector, underlining its commitment to ensuring that public officers face consequences for mismanagement of government resources.
