How Seven Ijaw Women Drowned In Home Town Of Deputy Senate President Omo-Agege

Tragedy struck on Saturday when seven women drowned after a vehicle they were travelilng in plunged into a river along Orogun Road in Ughelli North council area of Delta State.

Orogun community is the country home of Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

It was gathered the vehicle, a Toyota Sienna, had nine passengers and a driver on board, who were returning from a ceremony in Agbor area.

Two women, as well as the driver, who reportedly ran away from the scene, survived the unfortunate incident.

According to a community source, six of the deceased women are from Bomadi Federated Community in Bomadi LGA, while the seventh is from Peretoru Community in Ekeremo LGA of Bayelsa state.

According to reports, the vehicle veered of the highway and plunged into the Orogun river.

Residents and commuters plying the route were said to have made frantic efforts to rescue the victims but only two women made it out alive.

Chairman of Bomadi LGA, in a statement on Monday, condoled with the family members of the deceased women, describing their deaths as “monumental loss”.

It was further gathered that the deceased will be buried on Wednesday.

Delta Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe confirmed the incident to The Nation.

“Seven died. The driver escaped, he ran away. The vehicle fell off the bridge,” the PPRO said.
