The police officers who recently assaulted some travellers at a checkpoint in Edo State have been arrested.

The video of the assault, which went viral, had sparked outrage, particularly on social media.

In the video, a police officer stopped some travellers and physically assaulted a woman. The officer, who was in the company of his colleagues, also shot on the ground twice, and was seen arguing with some other travellers.

Nigerians reacted to the display of power and harassment and called for the intervention of the authorities.

Activist, Harrison Gwamishu took to his Instagram page to condemn the act, saying, “The authorities aren’t doing anything about the incident.”

A social media user, @jnrpope, said, “ Ff this officer is not dismissed disgracefully Nigeria will never be good”

@sosofitmgt said, “Let’s make sure it gets to the authorities and she gets justice.

Few hours later, Gwnishu gave an update that the officer had been arrested over the embarrassing incident.

“This officer and his entire team have been arrested and currently detained at SCIID Edo State police command.”

The Edo state police command also confirmed the arrest of the men.

“ SGT Jude Ogudu and four others spotted in the viral video assaulting a lady have been arrested by the Edo state police command. They are currently being held in the detention facilities of the state CID . The case is being investigated by the X-squad unit of the command,” it said in a statement.
