A Bill for an Act to amend the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) Act has passed second reading in the House of Representatives.

The motion for the Bill was sponsored by Representative Bamidele Salam, a member representing Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Advancing his reasons for sponsoring the Bill, the legislator from Osun State who made this known in a social media post on Thursday, said he sought a change in name of the agency from the National Directorate of Employment to the National Agency for Job Creation and Human Capital Development to give it a better sense of purpose and bring it in line with best global practices.

According to the post, the bill aims to, “review the objective of the NDE in a manner as to give the agency a better focus and organisational drive to create jobs and improve on the human capital of youths.

“To review the composition of the Board to allow for a broad spectrum of public and private sector collaboration and involvement in the formulation of appropriate policies and programmes to facilitate job creation in the various sectors of the Nigerian economy.”

Also, other reasons for the amendment bill was to, “enhance the funding regime of the agency so that it can serve as a hub of access to credit for the teeming youths who are interested in entrepreneurship and small-scale businesses.

“Domicile the agency directly in the Presidency as a way of galvanising more attention to the problem of unemployment and removing bureaucratic bottlenecks in its operations
