Andy Murray has withdrawn from his Toronto Masters round-of-16 match against Jannik Sinner due to an abdominal strain. On Thursday night, Murray and Sinner were scheduled to meet in Toronto. But just before the start of the match, Murray announced he would not be able to compete.

With the US Open around the corner, Murray seemingly didn’t want to risk further aggravating his injury.”I had a very similar issue last year in the tournament in Stuttgart before Wimbledon which forced me to miss the Queen’s Club tournament and I was able to play Wimbledon.

It took me about 10 to 12 days before I was feeling good again. This is not as bad as that but obviously the danger if you compete and play on it is you make it worse. So, I’ll need to see how it develops over the coming days and hopefully feel better in a few days.

I’m really sorry. Thank you,” Murray said in a statement.

Murray won two matches before abruptly withdrawing from Toronto

In his Toronto opener, Murray clinched a 7-6 (3) 6-0 win over Lorenzo Sonego. After beating Sonego, Murray also edged out Max Purcell 7-6 (2) 3-6 7-5.

So far this summer, Murray has played two tournaments on hard. Last week, Murray kicked off his summer on hard courts at the Citi Open in Washington, where he made the quarterfinal before losing to Taylor Fritz in a three-set match.

For Murray, the priority now is to be fully healthy and ready for the US Open, which starts later this month. Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, isn’t hiding that he is hoping to make at least one deep run at a Major before retiring.

In 2012, Murray became a Grand Slam champion after beating Novak Djokovic in the US Open final. It remains to be seen if the latest setback will impact Murray at the US Open.
