Coach Juan Carlos Ferrero says Carlos Alcaraz’s Wimbledon final win over Novak Djokovic is a result of “many hours of hard work.” On Sunday, 20-year-old Alcaraz came up with a huge performance to defeat Djokovic 1-6 7-6 (6) 6-1 3-6 6-4 in the Wimbledon final.

Just a month and a half earlier, Alcaraz was beaten by Djokovic in the French Open semifinal. In Paris, Alcaraz came out looking nervous and stressed and that triggered his cramps. But Alcaraz learned from what happened in Paris and did much better at Wimbledon.

Coach Ferrero on Alcaraz’s Wimbledon final win over Djokovic

“I see a lot of emotion, a lot of hard work. A lot of people see our victory, but behind it there are many hours of work and a lot of time away from home. At the start of the tournament, we knew how hard it was to win, but we’d just won Queen’s and it didn’t cost anything to dream.

Even though he didn’t begin his final very well, he learned from what happened in Paris. We have reason to be excited and to think big with Carlos. He’s taken us through something wonderful, and it’s hard to express what I feel in words,” Ferrero told Spanish radio station COPE.Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, entered the Wimbledon final without a loss at The All England Club since 2017.

Against Alcaraz, Djokovic was the favorite but the 20-year-old Spaniard came out determined not to lose to one of the greatest players in Wimbledon history. In the end, Alcaraz managed to beat Djokovic in five sets and lift his second Grand Slam title at The Championships.

Alcaraz will now take a small rest before kicking off his preparation for the North American hard court swing. In a month and a half, Alcaraz will kick off his title defense at the US Open.
