NIGERIANS over the week witnessed a series of events that shook the country. NIGERIAN TRIBUNE gives you top news this week.

The presidential candidates of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi; Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar; Action Alliance (AA), Solomon Okangbuan; and Allied People’s Movement (APM), Chichi Ojei, filed for the nullification of the declaration of Bola Tinubu of All Progressives Congress (APC) as president-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The opposition parties have refused to concede defeat in the February 25 presidential election, vowing to recover their mandate in court.

The presidential election petition tribunal sitting at the Court of Appeal, Abuja, however, granted the request by the PDP and Labour Party to inspect the election materials used during the presidential poll.

AA’s petition was contained in suit number CA/PEPC/01/2023, while that of APM was CA/PEPC/03/2023, and that of LP was marked CA/PEPC/04/2023.

Atiku swelled the list with his petition filed on Tuesday in Abuja. Although details of the application by the PDP Candidate were yet to be made available in the petition marked: /PEPC/05/2023, Atiku and his party had since faulted the entire process that led to the emergence of Tinubu as president-elect.

CJN, Tinubu purported London meeting

There had been several reports (not NIGERIAN TRIBUNE) claiming that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, had a secret meeting with the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, in London.

It was reported that the CJN was disguised in a wheelchair on the aeroplane to London.

The story generated many reactions that triggered the Supreme Court on Friday to distance the CJN from a purported meeting with the President-elect.

The Supreme Court’s spokesperson, Festus Akande, said the reports were false adding that though the CJN travelled out of the country, but was out for medical care not for meeting with the president-elect.

CBN orders Banks to open Saturdays and Sundays, evacuates banknotes from vaults

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed all commercial banks to open for operation on Saturdays and Sundays.

This is as the apex bank confirmed the evacuation of banknotes from its vaults to commercial banks across the country as part of a coordinated effort to ease the circulation of banknotes of various denominations.

The Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department of the CBN, Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, disclosed this late on Friday in Abuja, stating that a substantial amount of money, in various denominations, had been received by the commercial banks for onward circulation to their respective customers.

According to him, the CBN had directed all banks to load their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) as well as conduct physical operations in the banking halls throughout the weekends.

“Branches of commercial banks will operate on Saturdays and Sundays to attend to customers’ cash needs,” he noted, adding that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, would personally lead teams to monitor the level of compliance by the banks in various locations across the country.”
