An Ekiti State based Socio-political organization, The Progressive Movement says, the current economic hardship in Nigeria presents a good opportunity for regional economic collaboration among the Governors in the South West region of the country.

In a communique signed by its Coordinator, Comrade Sola Adigun and the Secretary, Comrade Abiodun Fatoki Comrade, The Progressive Movement argued that such collaboration should consider agriculture in particular, where the region has advantage of about eight months annual rainfall, arable land and numerous agriculture research institutes.

The progressive movement suggested that suggested effort would be complimented by improved networking among officials of the Amotekun Corps spread across five states of the region to provide security for the forest allegedly occupied by bandits and miscreants.

The Movement also urged the various states governments to prioritize rural roads and those leading to the farmsteads for easy access for farmers.

“The high cost of food prevalent today worsen the economic hardship and it’s more heightened by the challenge of banditry that had invaded our forest, destroying farmland and chasing farmers away without any respite.

We are convinced that with improved collaboration of the Governors, resolving these issues is very possible.”

The communique also charged the state Governors to implement more palliative measures urgently, including payment of arrears of salary, pension, gratuity as well as modest loans for petty traders to cushion the effect of the hardship.

The Progressive Movement maintained that there no Governor in the country should give excuse of inadequate resources going by improved federal allocation since the removal of fuel subsidy and various intervention of the federal government.
