Elerinmo Tasks Corps Members on Respect for Tradition, Culture in Host Communities

A revered traditional ruler in Osun State, the Elerinmo of Erinmo-Ijesa in Oriade Local Government area of Osun State, Oba. Dr. Michael Odunayo Ajayi, Arowotawaya II, on Tuesday delivered a lecture to the NYSC Corps members on “Custom and Tradition of Yoruba land”, aiming to educate them on the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.

The traditional ruler who delivered the lecture, held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede in Osun State encouraged the corps members to learn the Yoruba language and its civilization, emphasizing the importance of preserving their cultural heritage.

The lecture was a part of efforts to introduce the entire corps members to the basic customs and traditions of the Yoruba people as the Elerinmo encouraged the corps members to commit fully to their service, build resilience, and work hard.

Oba Arowotawaya who was addressing over two thousands (2000) Corps members from across the country, said further that, by learning about Yoruba culture, the corps members are expected to better understand and appreciate the local community they will be serving in.

“Yoruba, just like any other culture cherishes people who respect them and I want to warn you to always respect any elderly person you come across in your various communities”.

The Elerinmo who urged the corps members to respect the cultures and traditions of their host communities as they prepare for posting to their Place of Primary Assignment, PPA, said traditions and customs are ways of life of a people transferred from generation to generations.

Oba Arowotawaya in addition, also educated the corps members on Yoruba cultures and tradition, festivals and traditional attires, among other practice honour by the Yoruba race as he admonished the youths to learn how to respect elders, especially the traditional institution, whenever they find themselves as it will steer positive attention towards them.

“Dressing in Yoruba land depicts virtue which they should try as much to emulate” the Monarch added.

The highpoint of the well attended and colourful event was the presentation of gifts to the Elerinmo and the outpour of royal blessings on the corps members and entire camp community as well as group photograph.
