Murray withdrew from the Cincinnati Masters this week in order to be in his best shape for the US Open.
Murray won the 2012 US Open and Wilander feels that if he manages his condition well he can still push for more Grand Slam glory.
“Realistically for Andy Murray, it’s just to be able to get up in the morning, and being able to practise as hard as he needs to, as hard as he can,” Wilander told Eurosport.
“So to maintain the level where he is at, and actually go up a level as well, if he is going to contend in these tournaments.”
Wilander feels that Murray’s competitive spirit will drive him on in big tournaments and nacked him to rally from an early exit at Wimbledon.
He feels that there is no reason that Murray can’t move himself back into the top 20 and indeed even the top 10.
“I think he’s going to keep working away, it’s a tough out for anyone. He obviously loves the competition,” Wilander added
“Wimbledon must have been very disappointing for him in a way, but then again he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas who was ranked fifth at the time, so Murray, where can he get to?
“I think he must believe he can get back to somewhere between 10 and 20 in the world, and I would have to agree with that call in a way. I think he can, I think he will always be dangerous in the majors.
“Of course, he’s going to have to go down in the smaller tournaments and win matches to get his ranking up, but the ranking is almost irrelevant for Murray.
“It’s more what can he do in the Grand Slams, and I think that he can do some damage, just like he did here. He just didn’t come out on top against Stefanos Tsitsipas.”
Murray has worked really hard to battle back up to being the world No 40 but insists that his game is at a higher level than his ranking suggests.
“I think that the players I played against probably feel a similar way – that I’m not playing 40‑in‑the‑world level tennis,” Murray told reporters.
“I do think that I’m playing a better level than that. And that’s the thing that’s positive for me, and the thing that keeps me going, providing that I keep learning and improving and working on the right things, my ranking will keep going up and I’ll win more matches against the best players.”
