Serena Williams may have bid adieu to professional tennis, but she still influences the game like no other! Grand Slam winner Caroline Wozniacki re-entered professional tennis after a long hiatus of more than three years. She announced her retirement when her rheumatoid arthritis began to take a toll on her. But one day, out of the blue, the Dane announced her comeback, and the world cheered for the tennis mommy. Turns out, her best friend, Serena, played a huge role in her comeback, and Wozniacki has, since then, lit up the courts!
When the former World No.1 was pondering returning to the circuit, Wozniacki consulted her trusted confidant Serena for advice. For a long time, their bond has extended beyond the narrow professionalism and rivalries of the sport. Their friendship meant that the Dane could rely on Serena’s experienced advice, and now Wozniacki has revealed intimate details of her comeback and the tribute she paid to Serena when she herself had been 8 months pregnant!
After retiring in 2020, the two-time US Open finalist assumed a new role as a commentator for ESPN. When Momma Smash announced her retirement in 2022, Wozniacki was there to cheer for her as a commentator. But that was not the moment the 33-year-old decided to make a comeback. It was Serena’s moment, and her best friend mirrored the American legend’s emotions.
Regarding her commentary at Serena’s last tournament in the post-match conference, Wozniacki said, “Obviously I worked with ESPN. I was doing a lot of commentating and studio stuff. I really wanted to support her in her last tournament. But last year I was pregnant. I was heavily pregnant, I want to say – what, are we in September – I was eight months pregnant. I was just here to support my friend.”
The Australian Open champion revealed that her return to tennis was the last thing on her mind when she was a commentator. Watching the American legend bid farewell to the sport made her emotional and not ambitious. Since Wozniacki’s baby was due then, all she could think of was how to raise two kids at once. Serena, who is on the same path now, balances her family time with two kids while still being affectionate and supportive as the biggest cheerleader for her best friend.
