Iga Swiatek says she was “impressed” by how Carlos Alcaraz was able to recover and beat Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. Playing in his first Wimbledon final, 20-year-old Alcaraz got off to a pretty rough start as seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic won the first set by a 6-1 score.

At that moment, it seemed that Djokovic would go on to easily beat Alcaraz and tie Roger Federer’s all-time record of eight titles at The Championships. But then, Alcaraz stormed back to win 1-6 7-6 (6) 6-1 3-6 6-4. By beating Djokovic, Alcaraz also ended the Serb’s run of 34 consecutive wins at Wimbledon.

“I was impressed with how Alcaraz pulled himself together after the first set, where he seemed very stressed and it was evident that he couldn’t play his tennis, that Novak was dominating the court.

The way he came back during the final shows a lot of maturity. Despite his young age, he already has a lot of experience and knows how to get out of trouble,” Swiatek told Przeglad Sportowy.Meanwhile, Swiatek also achieved her career-best Wimbledon result this year.

Even though Swiatek didn’t win Wimbledon, she made her first quarterfinal at The Championships before losing to Elina Svitolina. Now, Swiatek says her 2023 Wimbledon run is giving her the belief that she can do even better in the future.”It’s a completely different story.

I went to Wimbledon this year with really low expectations. I wanted to grow, learn and feel more and more on the grass and I know I say that a lot, but now I actually managed to really concentrate on it. I came to the courts every day, not thinking about the result, only about what I wanted to improve.

It worked out for me, so that’s why I think I felt more at ease. From year to year it will be easier for me to get used to playing on grass after Roland Garros,” Swiatek said.
