Iga Swiatek is used to winning trophies, and her dry spell in the United States was very odd for fans, but despair not as she’s back in the winner’s circle after beating Liudmila Samsonova in the China Open final.

The last trophy Iga Swiatek won before this one was the Poland Open, which happened before she travelled to the US. Those events in the States weren’t that great for her because she failed to advance to the final and that tells you the sort of standard she set for herself.

Now in China, Swiatek made it to the final by beating Coco Gauff, ending her 16-match winning streak. She continued her own winning streak by beating Liudmila Samsonova in the final of that event, and it was an impressive showing.

Swiatek dominated this matchup in the past, besting Samsonova earlier this year in Dubai. This match was more competitive but not that much competitive, as she still cruised in two simple sets. Both opened well, facing barely any issues in their first few service games. However, Swiatek then took over.

She finished the first set on a 4-0 run, dominating rallies from the baseline. That’s generally the main problem for Samsonova, as she’s not consistent enough with her baseline play, putting herself in trouble against the likes of Swiatek.

The serve wasn’t helping either, as she served poorly in the opening set, giving her opponent even more chances. The second set didn’t go any better for the Russian as the same struggles persisted. Swiatek kept applying pressure, remained confident, and simply cruised to the finish line.

The final score was 6-2 6-2 for the Polish player who won trophy number 16. It’s her 5th this year but her first WTA 1000 one after she lost in Madrid and Dubai earlier this year. It’s her 6th career WTA 1000 trophy.
