Team World captain John McEnroe says it will be “a completely different story right off the bat” if Carlos Alcaraz suits up for Team Europe at the 2024 Laver Cup. This past weekend in Vancouver, Team World dismantled Team Europe with a 13-2 score.
In 2024, the Laver Cup is returning to Europe as it is scheduled to take place in Berlin. McEnroe, who has captained Team World since its inaugural edition in 2017, acknowledged it will be much tougher in Europe next year, especially if Alcaraz signs up to play for Team Europe. “We’ve got to take advantage of this, and so I think these guys are getting it, because I think in a couple of years, I mean, obviously next year it’s going to be a different story.
We’ll be back in Europe. A couple of guys, you know, Carlos Alcaraz, if he plays, it will be obviously a different story right off the bat. So we’ve got to take advantage of this opportunity and get some momentum,” John McEnroe said, via Sportskeeda.
After Team Europe clinched wins in each of the first four Laver Cup editions, Team World finally claimed its first win last year during Roger Federer’s farewell.
After Team World secured back-to-back wins over Team Europe, McEnroe highlighted that last year’s win meant a lot for their confidence and belief. “It was huge, just the whole experience, last year obviously with Roger retiring at Laver Cup and Rafa being there and Novak and Andy playing as well, I mean, it was an unbelievable atmosphere, and to win that, I mean, in the position we’re in.
I think once we got over the hump, obviously if you haven’t done it and then you do do it, you have more belief that you can,” McEnroe said.
