Opposition demonstrators thronged Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city, on Thursday, in continuation of protests against the outcome of last year’s general election won by President William Ruto.

The East African country held its general elections in August 2022 to choose its president, governors, and legislators for the national and its county Assemblies.

William Ruto of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was declared the winner of the presidential election winning with 50.5 per cent of the vote at 7,176,141 votes to defeat his opponent Raila Odinga, of the Azimio la Umoja coalition, who got 6,942,930, according to the official results reported by the BBC.

Mr Odinga who rejected the election results has since challenged the result, claiming the process was fraudulent.

But on Thursday some protesters in support of Mr Odinga continued their third wave of demonstrations against the outcome of the presidential elections which started on Monday, the Voice of America (VOA) reports.

According to the report, violence emerged after the protesters threw stones at police at the state capital with attackers setting fire to an office run by the ruling party in a western town in Nairobi.

The protesters have accused Mr Ruto of alleged mismanagement, while his supporters have accused Mr Odinga of using anger over rising prices, a global phenomenon, to press for political concessions and a possible role in government.

Addressing the protesters, the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday urged the demonstrators to go home.

“We are telling our elder Raila Odinga, the only way to get into government is through the ballot,” Mr Gachagua said.
