Organised Labour in Cross River State has issued its public instrument (bulletin) for strike, beginning from today.
The statement said: “Dear comrades, whereas an enlarged congress of Organised Labour met on October 6 at the Nigerian Civil Service Union (NCSU) secretariat and deliberated on issues troubling workers in Cross River State.
“Whereas the congress, after extensive deliberation, resolved that workers in the state and local government should down tools to press home our grievances. Workers are hereby called upon to stay at home from Tuesday, October 12.
“Comrades, stay at home until you hear from us.”
The statement, which was made available to reporters in Calabar, came along with an earlier notice of strike, which was written to Governor Ben Ayade and signed by the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ben. Ukpepi and his secretary; state Chairman, Trade Union Congress, Monday Ogbodom and his secretary; state Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, Godwin Otei and his secretary.
The letter to the governor, which served as notice of strike, showed a catalogue of issues, which the Organised Labour had with the government.
It said for the purposes of emphasis, the issues in contention are: “No implementation of backlog of promotion for the state and local government service; full implementation of minimum wage for state and local government workers; non-payment of salary of workers wrongfully removed from the payroll and return of payroll to the office of the Accountant General, among others.”
They listed 13 demands, asking for resolution.
