At least nine petitions have been received by the Election Petition Tribunal in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
The petitions were filed by the aggrieved candidates who took part and lost in the National Assembly election exercise held on February 25, in Ondo.
Musa Adam, the Secretary of the Election Petition Tribunal, disclosed this to journalists in Akure on Thursday.
Mr Adam explained that seven of the petitions were received in the House of Representatives and two in the Senate in the National Assembly elections.
He particularly said that the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Olusegun Phillips-Alonge, who took part in the House of Representatives – Ondo North Senatorial District election, filed a petition to challenge the outcome which produced Olajide Ipinsigba of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).
He also said that the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), in the House of Representatives exercise for Ondo Central, Morounfoluwa Bademosi, also filed a petition again Adeniyi Adegbonmire of the APC, who was declared the winner by the exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, the Election Petition Tribunal also received petitions from aggrieved party candidates who lost the National Assembly elections in Akoko South East/Akoko South West; Ese Odo/Ilaje; Okitipupa/Irele and Ondo East/Ondo West Federal Constituencies.
The Tribunal secretary added that petitions were also received from other federal constituencies which included; Akure South/Akure North, Akoko Southeast/Akoko Southwest, and Akoko Northeast/Akoko Northwest.
He, however, hinted that the Election Petition Tribunal was still awaiting petitions from candidates who might want to file a petition against the outcome of the House Assembly election conducted last week Saturday.
“It is better to let the candidates know that they have 21 days from the date of the announcement of the result of the election to file their petition before the tribunal,” Mr Musa added.
Recall that 17 political parties fielded candidates for the National Assembly (House of Representatives and Senate) elections conducted in Ondo.
The election was held in the nine federal constituencies and three senatorial district areas of the state.
