The public has been urged to follow Covid guidelines by Buckingham Palace and the Government

Hundreds of people travelled to royal residences to leave flowers for the late Prince Philip today – but the Royal Family urged the public not to gather in crowds amid the Covid pandemic.

Some mourners were seen fighting back tears outside Buckingham Palace after the nation lost the longest-serving consort in British history on Friday.

One man was pictured tipping his cap to honour the Duke of Edinburgh, while others hugged and prayed.

However, Buckingham Palace later released a statement asking people not to congregate and to follow coronavirus restrictions.

A sea of flowers were left outside the palace, as well as Windsor Castle on Friday – but a royal spokesperson said people should donate to charity instead, if they wish to pay tribute.

Their statement has been reiterated by ministers, who said ‘floral tributes should not be laid at royal residences at this time’.

A Cabinet Office spokesman said: ‘Although this is an extraordinarily difficult time for many, we are asking the public not to gather at royal residences and continue to follow public health advice, particularly on avoiding meeting in large groups and on minimising travel. ‘We are supporting the royal household in asking that floral tributes should not be laid at royal residences at this time.’
