Navy personnel in Effurun, Delta State has reportedly stormed Enerhen Police Divisional Headquarters in Uvwie Local Government Area of the state, beating a police sergeant simply identified as Kingsley with blood gushing out of his face.

The naval personnel is said to be a newly commissioned officer attached to the Nigeria Navy Ship (NNS Delta), Warri.

A video clip sighted by our correspondent revealed a bloodied nose policeman spoiling for a showdown while some persons were trying to calm him down.

Sporadic gunshots were also heard at the background of the video even as people began to scamper to safety.

The beating of the police officer was said to have come after some naval operatives allegedly invaded the Enerhen Police Divisional Headquarters in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State and beat up the police sergeant on duty.

This was said to have led to gunshots which rented the air in and around the premises of the station as early as 7.30 am on Friday, forcing nearby shop owners to hurriedly close business.

Residents of the area, who were either taking their children to schools or going to work during the mayhem, were forced to return home for safety until the shootings subsided.

The cause of the invasion could not be immediately ascertained.

It was, however, gathered that the Navy men were at the Police Station to seek the release of a relation arrested and molested earlier by policemen from the station.

None of the policemen was ready to speak on the incident as of the time journalists visited the station, but normalcy had returned to the area.

Calls and text messages sent to the Navy Commander Samuel Musa, Base Operations Officer, NNS Delta, Warri, were not responded to.

Sources said the naval personnel involved in the incident had been detained while an investigation into the incident had begun.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Delta Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, has yet to respond to enquiries from our correspondent before filing the report.
