Nick Kyrgios has come to Carlos Alcaraz’s defense after some decided to criticize the Spaniard for throwing his racket against the chair during his Toronto match against Tommy Paul. On Friday, Alcaraz threw his racket against the chair in frustration after losing the first set to Paul in their Toronto Masters quarterfinal match.

“Who the (expletive) cares. The dude is gonna be carrying the tennis load for the next decade. Good on him for showing he is human. Frustrated not playing up to standards. Also, let’s start giving codes to umpires,” Kyrgios wrote.

After losing the first set to Paul, Alcaraz was able to bounce back and force a third set.

But in the end, Alcaraz failed in his quest to complete a comeback win as Paul upset the Spaniard 6-3 4-6 6-3. In the first set, Paul broke Alcaraz three times and lost his service once en route to winning the opener. Alcaraz bounced back in the second set as he broke Paul in the seventh game and then held on to his service for the remainder of the set to force a third set.

In the third set, Paul earned the first break of the set in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead. Paul then held on to his service for the remainder of the match to seal a three-set win over Alcaraz. “I played a really good match today.

I really went after my shots. You can’t start any points on your heels against him or he’ll take advantage of that. So you really have to go after your shots early in the rally and I was feeling really good on the first-strike tennis.

That was the difference today,” Paul said after beating Alcaraz.Last year, Paul also upset Alcaraz when the National Bank Open was taking place in Montreal.
