Nick Kyrgios recounted Roger Federer’s stunning around-the-net shot against him as the Australian admitted to feeling “genuinely happy” that the Swiss tennis icon pulled off a shot like that against him. At the 2018 US Open, Kyrgios and Federer met in the third round.
In the third set of their match, Federer successfully hit an impressive around-the-net shot against Kyrgios, who was left staring in awe. On his Instagram Story, Kyrgios posted about Federer’s around-the-net shot and wrote: “Hahahaha I was genuinely happy he hit this against me.”
After hitting that shot, Federer went on to complete a 6-4 6-1 7-5 win over Kyrgios.
Kyrgios on how it felt to play against Federer
Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up, played against Federer seven times. When Kyrgios met Federer for the first time at the 2015 Madrid Masters, he upset the Swiss 6-7 (2) 7-6 (5) 7-6 (12).
Although Kyrgios and Federer had a couple of close battles in the next couple of years as well, the Australian never again managed to beat the Swiss. After losing his last six matches against Federer, Kyrgios made a very honest admission earlier this year.
When asked about playing the Big Three earlier this year, Kyrgios said that Federer “had the ability to make you feel miserable on the court.” “I think when it’s all said and done Novak will be the GOAT, but I think without Federer there is no Nadal, no Djokovic, he bought so many fans to tennis.
Nadal and Djokovic will let you work your way into the match a bit more, with your groundstrokes and stuff, but Federer can just make you feel like pure s—, makes the court look so small. If it’s purely tennis related I’d say Novak, but if it’s more than an athlete I’d say Federer,” Kyrgios said on The JBK Show earlier this year.
