A Professor of Agricultural Economics, Prof. Simeon Bamire, on Tuesday inaugurated as the 12th substantive Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

In his acceptance speech, Bamire promised to empower researchers with relevant skills and competencies to enable them to package continent research into brilliant proposals that will attract both national and international funding support.

The new VC said that during his tenure in office all effort will be geared toward leveraging the gains of the past years to transform the university into a world world class.

He stressed that the varsity will empower researchers with relevant skills and competencies to enable them to package continent research into brilliant proposals that will attract both national and international funding support.

He however, appealing to the divided unions to come together for the progress and development of the university, saying “a house divided against itself can not stand.”

“I am appealing to our unions that are not in good shape to come together so that we will be able to work together as one because a house divided against itself cannot stand.

“There are so many things my predecessor has done but there is always room for improvement and incidentally, the rooms are so large this time around because of the inadequacy of funds but by God’s grace, we are going to enhance our internally generated revenue in such a way that will ensure that we support the government funding opportunities,” he added.

The Pro-Chancellor of the university, Owelle Oscar Udoji, informed the new Vice-chancellor that the challenges facing the University are multifaceted, saying “a few of them tend to get worse and have over the years degenerated into an alarming proportion.”

He charged Prof Bamire to mobilise all stakeholders in tackling the prevalent management/union crises and over-unionised polity which he said has never been known to foster development.
