After a medical student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) committed suicide over poor academic performance, students have been urged to prioritize their mental health.

This followed the death of a 200-level student of the Faculty of Dentistry, Ajibola Ibitayo who killed himself after checking his semester’s result on Wednesday.

In a statement released by the Ife University Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Student Association (IFUTSA), described Ibitayo’s death as a painful wake-up call to the silent struggles many students endure alone, pleading with classmates to reach out for help and be there for each other during difficult time.

The statement signed by the association’s president and secretary Olayinka Phillip and Akinwola David adds, “This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of how overwhelming academic pressures can feel, especially when faced with setbacks. To our Part 2 students still awaiting results, please know that your worth is not defined by grades or outcomes. You are valued, capable, and deserving of support no matter what”.

The Association expressed Condolence to the family and friends of Ajibola, “It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the heartbreaking loss of one of colleagues from Dentistry JIBOLA who has left us far too soon. The pain of this moment is immeasurable, and our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him”.

It also urged students to prioritize their metal health as it is important as their academic performances, and for them to pay attention to their emotional health.

“Check in on your classmates, offer a listening ear, and don’t hesitate to seek help if you or someone you know is struggling. Mental health is just as important as academic success, and there is no shame in reaching out”, it added.
