The ancient town of Kuta in Osun State agog as the palace of the Olowu of Kuta, His Royal Majesty Oba Dr Adekunle Oyelude Makama (CON), played host to distinguished retired officers of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Regular Course 29 Association during their 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Commonly referred to by locals as the “Army Headquarters in the Forest,” the Olowu’s palace has over the years gained a formidable reputation for its deep-rooted relationship with Nigeria’s military establishment. The 2025 AGM further entrenched this legacy, bringing together high-ranking officers, camaraderie, and national pride.

The event began with an interfaith opening prayer session: a Christian invocation led by Mr. Ajeroba and an Islamic prayer offered by Mr. Musa, reflecting the unity and religious tolerance that bind the military fraternity. A solemn minute of silence was also observed to honor fallen comrades, a tradition that resonates deeply with those who have worn the uniform.

Addressing the newsmen, Oba Makama, a proud member of Course 29, emphasized the cultural and military significance of the event.

According to him, “This visit holds a great meaning within military tradition. We call it a sit-out. Course 29 holds its AGM every year, last year, it was Maiduguri. For 2025, Osun State was chosen, and I was privileged as a distinguished member to host this historic gathering.”

Olowu also reaffirmed his unflinching support for Nigeria’s military institutions:
“The Nigerian military has our support at all times,” he stated, underscoring his palace’s commitment to national stability, civil-military harmony, and patriotic service,” he concluded.

The sit-out serves not just as a reunion but also as a strategic gathering, a space where retired and active-duty officers can reflect, network, and reinforce their collective dedication to national service.

President of the NDA Regular Course 29 Association, Commodore Mathew Bolaji, praised the unity and continuity the group has maintained over the years:

In his words, “This is Course 29. We sit and plan how to chart our course further. We’re holding this year’s AGM in Osogbo, but one of the most important activities is our visit to the palace. Kabiyesi is one of us, and I’m very proud of him.”

In his remark, Lieutenant General Lamidi Adeosun (Rtd), a towering figure in Nigeria’s defense circles, commended the significance of the sit-out.

“This is Course 29. And this year, Osun State happens to be our host location. Kabiyesi, the Olowu of Kuta, is not only a revered traditional ruler but a long-standing friend of the military. He also shares a personal bond with my boss, Ambassador Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (rtd), who would have loved to be here but is currently out of the country.”

The 2025 sit-out in Kuta stands as a powerful reminder of the enduring bond between tradition and service, where royal drums echo the rhythm of regimental discipline, and the past and present meet to shape the future of a nation.
