A police officer in Ekiti State on Tuesday evening fired his gun and killed two people in the officers described as a mistake. The incident occurred around 10pm at the Omisanjana area of Ado Ekiti, the state capital, following an accident involving a driver.

It was learnt that following the incident, angry youths in the area, attempted to mob the driver of the vehicle, which made the driver call in the police to prevent them setting the vehicle ablaze.

However, the presence of police officers could not deter the youths who were adamant and uncontrollable. An attempt by the police to control the situation led to what they described as an accidental discharge that hit the two victims.

They were thereafter rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, but later died, their bodies have been deposited in the morgue.

The spokesperson for the Ekiti State Police Command, DSP Sunday Abutu, said investigation has commenced on the matter.

Abutu in a statement said: “The Command, upon receipt of the information, deployed the State Traffic Section to the scene to ensure there is no breakdown of law and order as well as ensuring the safety of the victims.
