Portugal midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, has blamed Argentine referee Facundo Tello for his side’s exit from the World Cup on Saturday.
The Selecao could not make it to the semi-finals of the World Cup after losing 1-0 to Morocco, who became the first African nation to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup.
Fernandes wonders why FIFA appointed a referee from Argentina who, according to him, does not know much about international football, to officiate the game against Morocco.
The Manchester United midfielder lamented that even Portugal, with a good number of referees with vast experience, did not produce a match official for the World Cup.
“I’ll say what I have to say. It’s very strange to have a referee who still has their national team in the competition and we don’t have a Portuguese referee,” Fernandes told RTP3.
‘Our referees officiate the Champions League, so they have the quality and level to be here.
“They [Argentine referees] don’t referee in the Champions League; they are not used to this type of game, they don’t have the pace for this.
“In the first half there is a clear penalty on me.”
He also berated the referee for allowing only eight minutes of added time in the game despite time-wasting by the Moroccan goalkeeper.
