A 57-year-old semi-truck driver died after a stolen car crash on 5 Freeway on Thursday, June 29.
According to Lakewood Police Department, officers made contact with a suspected stolen car involved in a Tacoma burglary overnight around 5:30 a.m. Then they tried to make a traffic stop on the stolen Kia near Berkeley Avenue.
The suspect vehicle left at a high rate of speed. Then, 10-15 seconds after the officers began the traffic stop, the suspect vehicle collided with a semi-truck.
The impact ejected the driver of the semi-truck and he landed on the 5 Freeway below the overpass. First responders administered life-saving measures. However, the driver died at the hospital.
Officers took the two juvenile suspects, both aged 16, into custody. Responders extracted the two suspects from the vehicle. Then they brought them to different local hospitals with minor injuries.
Authorities said they will book the two suspects after they are medically cleared from the hospital. They added the suspects could face vehicular homicide charges or higher.
