Ido-Oko Ijesa, a vibrant community in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, has etched its name in history with the installation of its second Iyaloja, Chief Mrs. Oluwabunmi Ariyo, and the first Babaloja, Chief Cornelius Agbogungboro. The landmark event, which took place during the week-long Restoration of Grace 2025 celebration, marked a significant milestone in the town’s economic and cultural evolution.

His Royal Majesty, Oba Michael Babatunde Adedeji Adooko of Ido-Oko Ijesa, presided over the installation ceremony, which also featured the inauguration of the Market Management Committee. This move is expected to enhance the town’s commercial activities and foster economic growth.

Speaking at the event, Prince Ademola Adeyeye emphasized the importance of market leadership in Yoruba tradition. He noted that the roles of Babaloja and Iyaloja are deeply ingrained in the community’s cultural fabric and are bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to the welfare of market stakeholders.

“These titles are not just ceremonial but represent the collective trust and respect of the people,” he said. “The Iyaloja and Babaloja play crucial roles in ensuring market stability, fairness, and growth.”

Historically, the Iyaloja is either chosen by market traders or appointed by the traditional ruler, reflecting the deep connection between market administration and traditional governance. This age-old practice ensures harmony and structure in commercial activities.

During the installation, Oba Babatunde Adedeji Adooko appointed members of the newly formed Market Management Committee. The committee, led by Ade Areola, Rotimi Ogunleye, and Evangelist Olusanya Bola, will assist the Babaloja and Iyaloja in overseeing market affairs and addressing traders’ concerns.

The formation of the Market Management Committee introduces a structured approach to market administration. It serves as a bridge between traders and traditional leadership, fostering cooperation and inclusivity in decision-making processes.

Pa. David Ajayi Daramola highlighted the crucial role of market leaders in mediating disputes, organizing activities, and implementing policies that enhance trade. He encouraged traders to ensure their goods are fairly priced to attract customers and prevent buyers from seeking alternatives in neighboring towns.

He also called on the youth to engage in agriculture, emphasizing its profitability and importance to the local economy. “Farming is a noble business, and I urge our young people to embrace it rather than engaging in activities that may lead them into trouble,” he added.

The former National President of Ido-Oko Progressive Union (IPU), Pa. Samuel Ayoade Dada, commended the incumbent President, Prince Ademola Adeyeye, and his team for organizing a successful Restoration of Grace 2025 event. He lauded their dedication to the community’s progress and unity.

The installation ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries, including His Royal Majesty, Oba Michael Babatunde Adeyemi Adedeji Adujelewu III, the Ado-Oko of Ido-Oko Ijesa; Olori Elizabeth Adenike Adedeji; High Chief Femi Aluko, Obalora of Ido-Oko; Oloye Sunday Oba Suta; Hon. Dosu Komolafe Loyin; and Chief Ishola Kunle, Olori Omo of Ido-Oko.

Also in attendance were Overseer Mabayoje Daramola (IPU) Deputy National Vice President and Rev. Johnson Agboola of St. Philip’s Church along with Baba Abe, Baba Samson Agbaje, Amb. Adisa Omoniyi, Baba Folorunsho Agbogungboro, Baba Ajanaku, and Baba Sunday Oke, among others.

Special guests included Chief Mrs. Omodele Aderibigbe (Iyaloja of Obokun), Chief Mrs. Ajoke Olaifa (Iyaloja of Olorunsogo), and Chief Mrs. Lia Fadekemi Adewumi (Iyaloja of Eeesun Ijesa).

In his address, Oba Babatunde Adedeji expressed profound gratitude to the sons and daughters of Ido-Oko Ijesa for their unwavering support in making the event a resounding success. He also appreciated the invited guests for their presence, stating that their participation signified solidarity and unity.

As part of the Restoration of Grace 2025 celebrations, the organizing committee announced the lineup of events for the following day. These include the commissioning of a community borehole project at 11:00 AM, the inauguration of the IPU National Executive Council, and the launching of the Ido-Oko Ijesa Anthem Remix at 12:00 PM.

The event’s chief launcher, Pastor Nathaniel Adeyemi (former Head of Account, Bureau of Public Service Pension, Osogbo), and guest speaker, Mr. Dele Ajayi of Unique Radio FM, Ilesa, will discuss the theme: Community Development Unions as Catalysts for Growth – A Case Study of IPU.

The grand occasion is expected to attract traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders who will witness and celebrate these remarkable milestones in Ido-Oko Ijesa’s journey towards progress and development.
