Valentine’s Day: Nigerian Youths Urged to Exercise Caution

Nigerian youths have been urged to exercise caution before, during and after this year’s Valentine’s Day celebrations to prevent the spread of HIV, AIDS and other sexual diseases.

The Convener of the Girl Child Education Advancement Initiative Foundation, Olori Adetokunbo Akinrera, gave the charge in his address at a One day Interactive Workshop and Love Feast Organised for senior school students in Ife South Local Government area of Osun State by her foundation at Ifetedo Civic Centre, as part of the activities to celebrate this year Valentine Day.

Olori Akinrera who was highly elated informed that, the workshop purposely organized for girls in order to combat the menace of sexual molestation and harassment during the annual Valentine’s celebration in the community.

While acknowledging that love and
intimacy are essential aspects of human connection, Olori Adetokunbo Akinrera who is the wife of the traditional ruler of the ancient town of Ifetedo, Oba Akinola Oyetade Akinrera, the Olubosin of Ifetedo, believed that they must be expressed with utmost responsibility and self-awareness.

According to Olori Akinrera, “We wish to remind the youth not to allow the sweetness of love becloud their sense of sobriety and propriety while men should stop the abuse and molestation of young girls, enough is enough.

“Today’s event is the fourth (4th) editions and I promise that our foundation would not relent in pursuing the development of the school children in our society as we must not leave everything for government to be doing, we have to collaborate with them to ensure the progress of these girl child” she added.

In his royal message at the colourful and well attended workshop Tagged, ‘I Can and I Will’ series 4, the Olubosin of Ifetedo, Oba Akinola Oyetade Akinrera commended his wife who is the facilitator of the educative programme while charging her to put more efforts towards the betterment and upliftment of young girls who are the leaders of tomorrow.

Oba Akinrera, admonished the students to concentrate on their education which is the only legacy from their individual parents for them to be a leader of tomorrow.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Welfare Officer of the Foundation, Omowumi Adetayo, urged the participants of the one day workshop to make use of the lectures whenever they are in their various schools or outside for their betterment.

“We must put a stop to the menace of sexual molestation and harassment of our girls now as it is on the increase, let us fight the fight together for us to put an end to it. The molestation doesn’t occur only during the annual Valentine’s Day, even during the ordinary day, it happens, so let us join hands together and say no to it” Omowumi Adetayo added.

The event witnessed, Quiz Competition, Interlude, Debate, Cultural Display and Lectures.
