Professor of Political Science, University of Lagos, Tunde Babawale has called on the federal government to decentralize the policing system in Nigeria in order to free the country from challenges of insecurity and criminality.
The Don made the call during the weekend, at the 33rd Annual General Conference of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) held at the National Secretariat, Ikeja, Lagos state.
Babawale, who was the guest speaker at the AGC said Nigeria is too big, populous to be managed by one central police system.
He charged the government to decentralize the system so as to allow the people to manage the security affairs, saying security is so important to be left alone in the hand of central authority.
According to him, “We have tried to centralized policing system and the result is that we having more insecurity, loss of life, and criminality all over the country, there is something wrong with that structure. The centralization doesn’t work under any circumstances.
“We must have decentralized policing to involve the community and to make them independent. In the United States, Universities have their own policing which is independent and there is no reason why we can not replicate that” he added .
Speaking, the National President, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Dr. Osagie Obayuwana, said that the the 33rd Annual General Conference of the organization to identify the fundamental challenges of the majority in Nigeria.
Obayuwana called on citizens across geo political in the county to mobilize against bad government to put an end to poverty in all aspects of Nigeria irrespective of language and religions.
He dded that CDHR as an organization has helped people to know their role as a citizens and providing solutions to the problems.
He said, “The victims of oppression and exploitation in Nigeria from North, South, East and West to come together to put an end to poverty in all aspects of Nigeria” he
However, the delegates across 23 states voted for the new executive that will paddle the affair of the organization for the next two years.
