The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Kashim Shettima; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas; Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu; and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), His Excellency Nyesom Wike, will engage with young leaders at the 2024 National Children Leadership Conference (NCLC) in Abuja.
Rep. Bamidele Salam, Founder and President of the Children of Africa Leadership and Values Development Initiative (CALDEV), made this announcement during a media briefing on Monday, November 11, 2024.
The conference is scheduled to take place from Sunday, November 17, to Thursday, November 21, 2024.
Rep. Salam emphasized that this year’s NCLC will serve as a vital platform for empowering Nigerian children aged 12 to 17, helping them develop leadership skills and engage in meaningful discussions on civic responsibility.
The event will bring together young leaders from across Nigeria, fostering a diverse and inclusive gathering focused on national unity, cohesion, and sustainable development.
“The underlying philosophy of this Programme is to convene the largest and most diverse gathering of young leaders in Nigeria to promote national unity, loyalty, integration, and patriotism.
“This initiative aims to shape the leaders of tomorrow, equipping our youth to actively contribute to national development and sustainability.”
The 2024 conference coincides with the global observance of Universal Children’s Day, held annually on November 20. With the theme *Empowering Young Voices, Building a Legacy for Sustainable Development*, the event will feature leadership workshops, skills acquisition sessions, child rights advocacy, and panel discussions.
“This year’s conference has been meticulously curated to create a lasting impact on the participants.
“We are confident that the 2024 NCLC will provide young Nigerians with the tools they need to succeed and make meaningful contributions to society.”
Prominent Nigerian leaders will also participate in the event. Vice President Kashim Shettima, who supported last year’s conference, is expected to attend as the Distinguished Special Guest of Honour. “We are grateful for his unwavering commitment to youth development,” Salam said, noting that Shettima’s participation in the 2023 conference inspired many young attendees.
The conference will also feature Rt. Hon. Speaker Dr. Tajudeen Abbass, who will lead a mentorship session for participants. Known for his advocacy on children’s issues and their inclusion in policy-making, Speaker Abbass will offer insights into governance and leadership. “His session will provide invaluable guidance on how young people can contribute to shaping public policy,” Salam remarked.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, will address youth leadership and legislative reforms, emphasizing the role of young people in shaping Nigeria’s legislative future. “His presence underscores the importance of civic engagement and policy-making for youth leadership,” Salam said.
His Excellency Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, will serve as the Chief Host of the event, addressing participants on the practical aspects of leadership. Salam expressed enthusiasm about Wike’s participation, noting that his extensive governance experience will provide valuable lessons for the young leaders in attendance.
Additionally, Mr. Charles Usie, Country Director of Plan International, will serve as a keynote speaker, sharing his expertise on youth empowerment and development.
Rep. Salam also highlighted the recognition of young Nigerians who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in their fields. The “Early Achievers” of NCLC 2024 include Ashezi Akwashiki, a 10-year-old education advocate, poet, and published author who has gained international recognition for her work promoting education and girl-child rights. Also honored is Master Sheun Ayomide Samuel, a 16-year-old inventor and student who has developed innovative, energy-efficient technologies, including rechargeable lights and fans. Another honoree, Maxwell Anyanwu Munachinso, a 15-year-old ICT consultant and AI specialist, has earned recognition as a coding instructor and software developer. Also honored is Safiya Alkali Ajikolo, a 14-year-old award-winning student recognized for being Best Student for three consecutive years.
“These young individuals have demonstrated extraordinary talent and creativity, and their achievements serve as an inspiration to all the participants of NCLC 2024,” Salam stated.
The conference will include a wide range of activities designed to foster critical thinking, decision-making, and leadership skills. Participants will engage in educational tours, including a visit to the National Assembly, where they will observe a parliamentary session and participate in a mock session.
The event will also feature plenary discussions on leadership, financial literacy, child rights advocacy, and skills acquisition.
Salam stressed that the NCLC is more than just a conference; it is a call to action for Nigeria’s children to play an active role in shaping the nation’s future. “This event is an invitation for Nigerian children to become active participants in shaping the future of our country and our continent,” he said.
The event will mark a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to nurture the next generation of Nigerian leaders.
