Former Argentina assistant manager, Miguel Ángel Lemme, has revealed that the late Diego Maradona told Lionel Messi to put La Albiceleste on his shoulder.
Lemme said this while speaking on the relationship between Maradona and Messi.
The 69-year-old assisted Maradona during his spell in charge of the Argentina national team.
He worked closely with Maradona and Messi in the lead-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
“Diego told him [Messi] to put the team on his shoulder, it gave him the freedom to play.
“He told him: ‘You do what you want’,” Lemme was quoted by Sportskeeda as saying.
Meanwhile, Argentina was eliminated from the 2010 World at the hands of Germany in the quarter-finals after losing 4-0.
Messi will now hope to help lead Argentina to victory when the 2022 World Cup starts in November.
