Zamfara State House of Assembly has officially begun impeachment process against the state Deputy Governor, Mahdi Gusau, who was reportedly served a notice on Monday.

Alhaji Nasiru Magarya, the Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, has asked the Clerk, Shehu Anka, to issue all members with the impeachment notice on Gusau.

The spokesman for the House, Mustafa Kaura in a statement said the Speaker on Wednesday gave the directive allowing lawmakers to carefully study the allegations levelled against the deputy governor.

According to him, the action was pursuant to Section 188 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“With this development, the House is following due diligence of the law as contained in the relevant provisions of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” the statement said.

The House of Assembly on Monday served the Deputy Governor of the state, Gusau, with an impeachment notice.

Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Information, Shamsudeen Hassan, told journalists the lawmakers had decided to impeach the deputy governor over allegations of abuse of office.

According to Hassan, the deputy governor breached sections 190 and 193 (1), (2) (a)(b)(c) of the Constitution.

The allegations against Gusau were listed as:

“Abuse of office: This includes constitutional breach of sections 190 and 193 (1), (2) (a)(b)(c), of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

“Criminal self-enrichment using public funds: This includes criminal diversion of state funds, conspiracy to defraud the state and approval of dubious retirement in his office.

“Failure to discharge constitutional duties which give rise to insubordination.”

Gusau, who is bereaved as he lost a close relation this week, has however insisted that he is not guilty of the allegations.
