Former director of news, Osun State Broadcasting Cooperation, Mr Adetoyese Shittu-Alamu has said that journalism played a the major role in the achievement of Nigeria’s 1960 independent which made the freedom achievable from British Government without blood shed.

According to Shittu-Alamu, Nigeria press was the instruments of both attack and defence for the combining forces of nationalism and freedom agitation who secured political independence for the country calling Nigeria from the British government of her Majesty the Queen on 1st October, 1960.

Shittu-Alamu stated this on Thursday while speaking on a topic “Journalism, The Past, The Present And Online Media Practice In Nigeria” at a 2-day workshop of Osun Online Media Practitioners Association organized for members held at Ben Ber event centre, Osogbo, Osun State capital.

He added that the war of Nigeria’s independence was fought more on the pages of Nigerian newspaper than any other battle field.

The public speaker maintained that no gun short were fired and no blood was shed, adding that several earth-shaking editorial and columns were written.

“It is important to remind and better still inform you young media practitioners who constitute the large percentage of the audience at this seminar that Nigerian’s independence was not fought on the battlefield.

“Unlike what happened in some countries such as Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Democratic Republic of Congo and several others.” Shittu-Alamu said

He however, charged Online Media Practitioners to emulate those that have practised the profession with decorum.

“You must organize yourselves more seriously and professionally to be able to compete and compete well.” he said
