After careful consideration, the Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk fight has been pushed back and gets an official date
When the fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou ended, boxing analysts wondered if the unification Heavyweight title fight between Tyson and Oleksandr Usyk would be pushed from December to some early 2024 date.
The punches Ngannou landed on Tyson Fury were a bit stronger than the ‘Gypsy King’ expected. Leading up to the fight, Usyk kept on doubting that the fight would take place at all.
Given the previous negotiations, it is only natural he doesn’t trust Frank Warren or Fury himself. But on Thursday, the fight finally got an official date and just as we all expected, it has been pushed a couple of months. The fact that this fight is also taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia may be the reason the event was pushed as well.
The recent ‘Day of Reckoning’ boxing event was announced for December 23, which was initially the date for the Fury vs Usy fight. In this mega card, we will have Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, Daniel Dubois, and Dmitry Bivol getting their own fights separately.
These news breaking already gave us a head up of what would eventially be announced about the Fury vs Usyk fight.
The black eye Tyson was sporting a day after fighting Ngannou was more than enough reason for promoters to make the call to push the date to February 17. A fight that is still taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with no undercard announced just yet. But we are finally getting to see the two best Heavyweights in the world fighting for supremacy.
Mike Tyson was recently at the World Boxing Council’s 61st convention, he was asked about the fight that is now slated for February. While talking to the folks at ESPN, here’s what Mike Tyson said: “I gotta go with Fury. He is the best fighter in the world, especially amongst heavyweights. Great fighters can lose, they can look bad but that doesn’t mean they are not great fighters still. A smaller opponent is difficult to figure out sometimes, they move a lot and I feels he will have a hard time finding him in some rounds because he is smart and quick.”
