Osun LG Crisis: APC Accuses Adeleke Govt of Plotting Public Disorder

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, and local government chairmen and councillors elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) have accused the Osun State Government of deliberately escalating the lingering local government crisis to create tension and public disturbance in the state.

The APC made the allegation on Friday while reacting to the recent judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, warning members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elected during the February 22, 2025 local government election against what they described as a wrongful interpretation of the court ruling.

Addressing journalists in Osogbo, APC legal adviser, Barrister (Chief) Adegoke Ogunsola, insisted that the reinstated APC chairmen and councillors remain the legitimate occupants of their offices, noting that the judgment delivered on June 15, 2026, had already been appealed.

He disclosed that an application for stay of execution had been filed and served on relevant parties, stressing that any move by PDP-elected officials to take over local government secretariats before the determination of the appeal could undermine due process and threaten peace in the state.

Ogunsola said the APC officials had approached the Federal High Court, Osogbo, on September 12, 2025, seeking clarification on the commencement and duration of their tenure based on existing laws guiding local government administration in Osun.

He explained that although the court dismissed their case, the decision was immediately challenged at the Court of Appeal, adding that the pending appeal remained a legal process that all parties must respect.

“The interpretation being given to the judgment by the Osun State Government and its allies that it validates the February 22, 2025 local government election is misleading and capable of causing unnecessary unrest,” Ogunsola said.

The APC leaders accused Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration of attempting to force PDP officials into local government offices by seeking police protection for them, describing the move as “dangerous and capable of creating avoidable crisis.”

They maintained that the PDP chairmen and councillors were not parties to the suit before the Federal High Court and that the court did not issue any order recognising them as beneficiaries of the judgment.

“The police are aware that an appeal has been filed and that the motion for stay of execution has been served. Any attempt to enforce the judgment at this stage may lead to a breakdown of law and order,” Ogunsola added.
