Plateau United stumbled in the title race once again after going down to a 2-0 defeat against Abia Warriors in Aba on Saturday.

The Jos club also missed the chance to reduce the gap between them and leaders Rivers United following the disappointing defeat.

Plateau United, who occupies the second position on the table went into the game four points adrift of leaders, Rivers United.

Rivers United will look to increase the gap to seven points when they host Remo Stars at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt on Sunday.

Abia Warriors went ahead courtesy of Innocent Gabriel’s free-kick on 35 minutes.

Plateau United wasted a number of clearcut chances to draw level and was punished deep into stoppage time when Imeh Atobasi doubled the hosts’ advantage.

Elsewhere, Rangers moved to third position on the log following a 1-0 win against Dakkada at the Awka Township Stadium.

Christian Nnaji nodded home the winning goal 25 minutes from time after he was teed up by Eso Archibong.

Eight other matches will be played in the Nigeria Professional Football League on Sunday.
