Taylor Fritz joked “annoying” climate protestors” make him want to fly on jets more. On Friday, Fritz clashed against Andy Murray in the Washington round-of-16. At one point, the match was interrupted after oil protestors decided to send a message on a tennis court.
“My thoughts on it in general are, like, I get they’re protesting, but, like, there’s just got to be a better way to do it. Who’s going to — like, I don’t understand how people are going to get behind a cause when you’re ruining everyone else’s good time.
Like, it doesn’t really make sense to me. I said, as a joke, Oh, wow — because it’s annoying obviously when they do it. It’s ruining everyone’s time. Everyone wants to watch the tennis. So I jokingly said, ‘Honestly, this makes me want to go fly on jets more’
I think, you know, they’re supporting a good cause, but the way they’re doing it, like, who’s going to want to listen when they’re just annoying everybody,” Fritz said.
Fritz was able to recover and beat Murray
After the first set, Fritz found himself losing.
But top-ranked American Fritz staged a comeback and beat Murray 6-7 (2) 6-3 6-4. Down by a set, Fritz started the second set with an early 3-0 lead. In the fifth game, Fritz saved a break point before serving out for the second set in the ninth game.
In the third set, Fritz claimed the lone break of the set in the ninth game and also saved 7-of-7 of Murray’s break points in the decider. “I feel like when I’m down those break points, sometimes the opponent might feel some added pressure to it.
It’s been feeling great because that’s not always the case, so I’m really happy with how I’ve been playing these big points,” Fritz said after beating Murray.
