The Nigerian Navy has apprehended 11 individuals accused of attempting to construct an illegal refinery in Rivers State.

The base operations officer of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder in Port Harcourt, the state capital, Sa’id Kabir, said the suspects were arrested during a patrol along the Krakrama waterways aimed at combating illegal oil bunkering.

He added that the strategic operation aligned with the Navy’s zero-tolerance policy against crude oil theft and illicit petroleum product activities.

The apprehension occurred on January 23 when the Navy’s Tactical Response and Assault Squadron intercepted a boat carrying the suspects near the Krakrama Creeks.

The Navy found evidence suggesting the suspects’ involvement in constructing an illegal refining facility.

Among the items discovered were ten metal plates, fourteen angle irons, and twenty gas cylinders, all concealed within the wooden boat. Investigations revealed the suspects’ intent to transport these materials to Bille, a riverine community, for the illegal refinery’s construction.

Kabir also said that the suspects are specialists in building illegal refineries and were reportedly contracted by an individual known as Mr. John, who is currently sought by the Navy.

“The arrests were made in line with the strategic mandate on zero tolerance for crude oil and other petroleum products theft,” NAN quoted Kabir as saying.

“NNS Pathfinder’s Tactical Response and Assault Squadron intercepted a boat with 11 persons on board during a patrol around Krakrama Creeks on January 23.

“Ten metal plates, 14 angle iron and 20 gas cylinders were found carefully concealed in the wooden boat for the construction of an illegal refining facility in the creeks.

“Investigation revealed that the suspects were conveying the materials to Bille, a riverine community with the intent to construct an illegal refinery.

“It was also discovered that the suspects specialise in the construction of illegal refineries and were contracted by one Mr John. The base is making concerted efforts to arrest John and other suspects involved in this criminal enterprise.”

Kabir assured the residents of Rivers State that the Navy remains steadfast in ensuring a peaceful and secure environment conducive to legitimate business activities.

He said, “The base will not be deterred by the antics of enemies of the nation in the discharge of its constitutional duties.

“We assure the people of Rivers of our readiness to facilitate a peaceful and secure environment for the conduct of legitimate business activities.”

The suspects, along with the seized items, were handed over to Monday Lawal, the Rivers Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Lawal assured the public of a swift investigation into the matter and stated that the suspects would be charged in court following the investigation’s conclusion.
