The conclave of 133 Catholic cardinals has elected American Cardinal Robert Prevost as the new pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.
The election was concluded on Thursday, the second day of the conclave, which began 16 days after the death of Pope Francis on April 21. White smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney at 6:10 p.m. Vatican Time, signaling that a new pope had been chosen.
The decision came after two failed attempts by the cardinals to elect a successor to Pope Francis.
