NANS Raises Alarm Over Alleged Uncivil Night Operations by Police in Osun

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone (Zone D), has raised concerns over what it described as continuous uncivil and unprofessional night operations allegedly carried out by officers of the Mobile Police Department (MOPOL) along the Osogbo–Ikirun Road.

In a statement issued by the Secretary General, NANS Southwest and obtained by The Source on Friday, said it has received repeated complaints from residents, especially youths and students, about the conduct of some Mobile Police operatives during night patrols.

The association alleged that the officers engage in indiscriminate roadblocks, aggressive intimidation, physical harassment, and extortion of motorists, motorcyclists, and even pedestrians plying the route at night.

According to the statement, “The Office of the Secretary General, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest (Zone D), wishes to formally report and express deep concern over the continuous uncivil, unprofessional, and inhumane night operations allegedly carried out by officers of the Mobile Police Department (MOPOL), particularly those stationed at the Stadium Roundabout axis along the Osogbo–Ikirun Road.

“It is extremely disheartening to witness and receive repeated reports of how some operatives of the Mobile Police engage in irrational conduct during night patrols, including indiscriminate roadblocks, aggressive intimidation, physical harassment, and alleged extortion of residents most especially youths and students using cars, motorcycles, and even pedestrians who ply the route at night.

“These actions clearly negate the professional ethics, rules of engagement, and community-friendly policing principles consistently emphasized by the Inspector-General of Police and other senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

“Of particular concern is the apparent inability of some officers on duty to distinguish between officials of recognized student bodies, government workers, and law-abiding citizens. This level of unprofessionalism raises serious questions about the training, orientation, and supervision of officers deployed for night patrol duties. While this concern is not raised on the basis of office or privilege, it reflects a broader worry about how such officers may handle other sensitive public engagements involving ordinary citizens.

“In view of the above, we respectfully call on the Federal Government, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Osun State Police Command, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 11, Osogbo, and all relevant authorities to urgently investigate this matter, call the attention of the department involved, and ensure that officers assigned to road patrols and night operations are properly educated, disciplined, constructive, respectful, and professionally coordinated in the discharge of their duties, strictly for the protection of lives and property.

“Furthermore, we advise all road users, particularly youths and students who travel at night, to remain calm and law-abiding in any encounter with security operatives, avoid confrontation, and promptly report any unprofessional conduct through appropriate and lawful channels, as personal safety must always come first.

“NANS Southwest remains committed to constructive engagement with security agencies to promote mutual respect, accountability, and a safer environment for Nigerian students and citizens at large.” he said.
