Osun Labour Suspends UBA Picketing Over LG Funds Dispute

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), alongside the Trade Union Congress and the Joint Negotiation Council, under the umbrella of the Osun State Joint Labour Movement, has announced the suspension of its planned industrial action against United Bank for Africa in Osogbo.

The decision was contained in a press release issued on Monday, jointly signed by
Comrade Christopher Arapasopo Chairperson, NLC and Comrade Bimbo Fasasi, Chairman, TUC following a series of deliberations involving organised labour, representatives of the bank, and mediation by the Department of State Services, Osun State Command.

The labour unions had earlier directed members to mobilise for a peaceful picketing of UBA branches in Osogbo beginning Tuesday, March 24, 2026, in protest over issues related to Local Government funds.

The directive followed resolutions reached at a joint meeting of the State Administrative Council (SAC) and State Executive Council (SEC) held on March 17 at the Labour House in Osogbo.

However, after engagement facilitated by the DSS, both parties agreed to suspend the planned protest to allow for further dialogue. Key resolutions from the meeting include the immediate suspension of the picketing exercise, the scheduling of a joint meeting between labour leaders and UBA representatives, and a commitment to resolve the dispute over Local Government funds within one week, from March 23 to March 30, 2026.

The Joint Labour Movement emphasized that the suspension reflects good faith and a willingness to pursue amicable resolution through constructive engagement.

Reaffirming its stance, the union reiterated its commitment to defending democracy, economic justice, and social progress, stressing that its struggle would remain peaceful, lawful, and resolute.

Labour leaders also praised members for their resilience and unity, underscoring the enduring strength of collective action with the slogan, “the union makes us strong.”
